Amazing barn find! 1930's wooden crate/box with a nailed end construction. Lettering on bottom, one long side and one end is still legible. No top. Made of a very thick wood and highly patinated. This item was only light brushed and has not been cleaned. Photos are slightly enhanced (bright light) to show lettering.
Lettering reads: Red Warrior Gold & Red Penna Pattern Axes 3-1/2 - 4-1/2 Double Bitts. One end also has a stamped (indented in the wood) date of 2-12-37.
Research leads us to the conclusion that this box and the axes it held were produced/packed in February of 1937. The pattern was a Pennsylvania type and double bitt would mean a chopping edge on both sides of the axe head. We think that the sizing (3-1/2 - 4-1/2) would designate the size of the chopping edge (one size on either side).
The box measures (outside dimensions) 14-3/4" x 7-1/4" x 6" tall
Please note that any other items shown in the photos other than those described above are only incidental and not a part of your purchase.
